Ombre verses Balayage

What is the difference between Ombre and Balayage?

I get asked this question ALL THE TIME!

The word Ombre comes from a french word "shadow"

it is a transition of a lighter shade to a darker shade. Generally ombres work better on brunettes because it is the least subtle.

Balayage comes from another french word meaning "to sweep" when applying the color you sweep the color freehand with a brush through a small triangle giving the transition down into a lighter color. With balayage, there are darker pieces left on the bottom to create dimenision and a more natural look.
